About Todd Smith, Founder
My entire life has been spent exploring remote destinations and working in the adventure travel industry. At the impressionable age of 17, my grandfather rewarded me with a plane ticket to London and a summer long European railroad pass instilling in me the same sense of wonder, adventure and appreciation he had learned as boy transiting the Panama Canal. Studying Biology and Ecology at California State University at San Diego, I was introduced to the rivers, canyons and deserts of the US Southwest and the magnificent splendor of the Baja Peninsula. A bohemian lifestyle of seasonal work and worldwide travel eventually led to the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Lake Tahoe where I worked as Assistant Manager of Guest Services at Squaw Valley USA. With summers free from the ski industry I worked as a naturalist interpreter in Glacier Bay National Park in Alaska.
Eventually I left Tahoe to work in Alaska full time, leading kayak tours, training guides, and exploring the backcountry of North America's last wilderness. Throughout the next six years, I guided and developed wilderness adventures helping establish the adventure cruising industry in Alaska, in which small vessels outfitted with kayaks, zodiacs and expert guides allow travelers who would not otherwise have the opportunity to experience true Alaskan wilderness. In 1998 I also brought this unique style of travel to Mexico's Baja Peninsula and the Sea of Cortez, a welcome return to sun and sand after years of working in Alaska.
After leaving Alaska, I worked as General Manager for a leading ecotourism operator based in Seattle Washington, creating, marketing and selling authentic travel around the globe. During my travels and professional career, I have been featured on television shows such as Lonely Planet and Jack Hanna's Animal Adventures, and have been a guest lecturer at the Seminar for Thematic Cruises and Ecological Tourism in the Sea of Cortez and Outside Magazine's IATOS World Congress on Adventure Tourism. I have been a consultant to the travel industry, consulting on a wide range or topics relating to adventure travel, small ship cruising, guide and safety training, natural history interpretation and the development of sustainable tourism.
Founding AdventureSmith Explorations has realized my dream of sharing my passion and knowledge of adventure travel with others seeking the connections and rewards of a well crafted journey.
